Significance of Holika Dahan

Holika Dahan is rooted in the legend of Prahlad and Holika. According to Hindu mythology, Prahlad was a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, but his father, King Hiranyakashipu, opposed his devotion. The king’s sister, Holika, who was immune to fire, attempted to kill Prahlad by sitting with him in a burning pyre. However, divine intervention ensured Holika was burned to ashes, while Prahlad remained unharmed. This event symbolizes the destruction of evil and the protection of the righteous.

Rituals of Holika Dahan

  1. Collection of Wood – Days before Holika Dahan, people gather wood and other materials for the bonfire.
  2. Preparation of the Pyre – A pyre is set up in an open space with an effigy of Holika.
  3. Worship and Offerings – Before lighting the fire, devotees perform a simple puja and offer haldi, kumkum, flowers, coconut, and other items to the bonfire.
  4. Lighting the Bonfire – Families and communities gather to witness the burning of Holika, symbolizing the end of negativity and evil influences.
