Ambitious high-speed rail network aims to connect major cities and boost regional growth

India may soon see a major leap in high-speed rail connectivity in the south, with a proposed bullet train network promising to drastically cut travel time between key cities. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has outlined a plan that could connect Amaravati, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune and Mumbai through a high-speed corridor.

The proposed network is being envisioned as a “high-speed diamond” that links major economic hubs, making travel faster while strengthening trade and connectivity across regions.

If implemented, the project could significantly reduce travel time between major routes:

  • Amaravati to Hyderabad: around 70 minutes
  • Amaravati to Chennai: about 112 minutes
  • Hyderabad to Pune: nearly 1 hour 55 minutes
  • Pune to Mumbai: just 48 minutes
  • Chennai to Bengaluru: around 73 minutes
  • Hyderabad to Bengaluru: about 2 hours 8 minutes

These timelines highlight how the network could transform long-distance travel into short, efficient journeys.

The government is positioning this project not just as a transport upgrade but as an economic catalyst. Similar to the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor, the southern network aims to bring cities closer, boost business activity and improve regional integration.

By reducing travel time between industrial and urban centres, the project is expected to enhance trade, tourism and overall mobility.

Along with the bullet train proposal, several major railway developments were announced.

The South Coast Railway Zone is set to be formally notified on June 1, 2026, addressing a long-pending demand related to state reorganisation.

There are also plans to expand the Kolkata-Chennai railway corridor into a four-line network. This upgrade is expected to allow nearly 500 additional trains, improving both freight and passenger movement while strengthening access to ports and key economic zones.

Railway investment in Andhra Pradesh has seen a sharp increase in recent years. Budget allocation has grown significantly, with large-scale infrastructure projects currently underway in the state.

Additionally, 74 railway stations are being redeveloped as part of a nationwide modernisation effort aimed at improving passenger experience and infrastructure quality.

The government’s broader vision combines transport and digital infrastructure as twin engines of growth. Alongside railway expansion, there is also a push for domestic technology manufacturing and data infrastructure development.

If executed as planned, the southern bullet train network could reshape travel, reduce distances between cities, and create a more connected economic landscape across India.
