India vice-captain also surpasses Harmanpreet Kaur to become the country’s leading six-hitter in women’s T20Is

Smriti Mandhana continued her extraordinary run in international cricket on Sunday, rewriting the record books yet again with a landmark performance against Sri Lanka in the fourth T20I of the ongoing five-match series. The Indian opener became the first woman cricketer in history to score more than 1,700 runs in a single calendar year, underlining her dominance across formats in 2025.

Mandhana achieved the feat with a fluent knock of 80 runs off 48 balls at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. Opening the innings, the left-hander struck 11 fours and three sixes, setting the tone for India’s innings. Her effort earned her the Player of the Match award and took her overall tally for the year to 1,703 runs from 32 international matches.

With this, Mandhana broke her own previous record of 1,659 runs, which she had set last year across formats. The consistency and volume of runs highlight her evolution into one of the most reliable batters in the women’s game globally.

In the ongoing calendar year, Mandhana has scored 1,362 runs in 23 One-Day Internationals and 341 runs in nine T20 Internationals. She remains the only woman cricketer to score more than 1,000 runs in ODIs in a single calendar year, a testament to her impact at the top of the order.

Her performance against Sri Lanka also saw her surpass Harmanpreet Kaur to become India’s leading six-hitter in women’s T20 Internationals. During her 80-run knock, Mandhana hit three sixes, taking her past the former record held by the Indian captain. The milestone further strengthens her status as one of the most aggressive and effective batters in the shortest format.

Mandhana’s year has been defined not just by milestones but by match-winning contributions. Earlier, she became the fastest woman batter in the world to reach 10,000 international runs, achieving the landmark in just 280 innings. The achievement placed her ahead of several legends of the game and cemented her position among the modern greats.

In 2024, Mandhana had already shown her all-format prowess by scoring 149 runs in a Test match, 747 runs in 13 ODIs and 763 runs in 23 T20Is. Building on that foundation, her 2025 numbers reflect an even higher level of consistency and fitness.

In the list of batters with the most runs in a calendar year in women’s cricket, Mandhana now leads the chart, followed by South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt. Wolvaardt scored 1,593 runs across formats last year and was a standout performer in the Women’s ODI World Cup, but Mandhana’s tally has set a new benchmark.

At 29, Mandhana appears to be at the peak of her career, combining experience with hunger and technical finesse. With several international fixtures still ahead, she remains well placed to push the record even further before the year concludes, adding yet another chapter to an already remarkable season for Indian women’s cricket.
