Pune: The three-member ward structure created for the elections of Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipality as well as other municipalities in the state and the one-member ward structure for the Mumbai municipal elections have been cancelled. In this regard, a gazette has been published in the name of the Governor on Thursday (August 4). So now for Pimpri-Chinchwad and other Municipalities, as in 2017 (except Mumbai Municipality), the four-member ward structure will continue.

Accordingly, orders have been given to the State Election Commission to re-do the process of removing reservation and preparing the voter lists. In the gazette to cancel the three-member ward structure, it has been highlighted that it will not be appropriate to increase the number of municipal councillors assuming the population of 2021 and the Supreme Court has ordered to announce the election programme on the basis of the ward structure made, on and before March 11, 2022.

In the recent meeting of the state cabinet, it has been decided to hold the municipal elections in a four-member ward structure instead of a three-member ward structure.

Now the Governor has also sealed this decision. The State Election Commission has been ordered to cancel the three-member ward structure, drop the reservation and cancel the voter lists prepared for the municipal elections by issuing a gazette in the name of the Governor on Thursday.

The former Standing Committee Chairman of Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation Vilas Madigeri filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the State Government and the State Election Commission as the state government or the State Election Commission is not implementing the order given by the Supreme Court as to which ward structure should be fixed regarding municipal elections.

“As per my request and as per the order given by the Supreme Court, the government under the leadership of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the stance of taking the upcoming municipal elections as per the ward structure and the number of corporators as in 2017,” said Madigeri.
