Jay Shah has been elected as the new chief of the International Cricket Council (ICC), marking a pivotal moment for the future of the sport. Set to begin his term on December 1, Shah, who was the only nominee to replace Greg Barclay, will step down as the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to assume his new role at the ICC. At 35, Shah will be the youngest person to hold the ICC Chair position, which he will lead for an initial three-year term, with the possibility of a three-year extension.

Shah’s election comes at a critical time for cricket as the sport prepares to make its debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. His leadership will be instrumental in positioning cricket as a global sport, capitalizing on its vast fan base and growing commercial appeal. Shah expressed his excitement and commitment to globalizing cricket further, emphasizing that his tenure would focus on expanding the sport’s reach and maintaining its diverse formats.

One of Shah’s primary objectives will be to balance the three formats of the game—Test, One Day International (ODI), and T20. While T20 cricket has surged in popularity, Shah has emphasized the importance of preserving Test cricket, which he considers the foundation of the sport. He has proposed a dedicated fund to support Test cricket, ensuring that players are motivated to participate in this longer format. This initiative, backed by the BCCI, Cricket Australia, and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), aims to provide Test cricketers with financial incentives, including a $10,000 payment from a common pool.

Shah’s experience as BCCI secretary, where he successfully managed two Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons during the pandemic and initiated the Women’s Premier League, positions him well to handle the ICC’s commercial challenges. His tenure at the BCCI saw significant financial growth, including securing a lucrative broadcast deal through an e-auction.

However, Shah will also face numerous challenges in his new role. The recent T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the US and Caribbean, faced several issues, including budget overruns and poor pitch conditions. These challenges have led one of the ICC’s major broadcasters, Star, to request a renegotiation of its broadcast deal, highlighting the financial pressures on the organization.

Shah’s strategic vision includes addressing these commercial hurdles while fostering greater unity within the cricket community. He aims to work collaboratively to overcome barriers and enhance the sport’s global standing, seeing every challenge as an opportunity for growth and innovation. His leadership will be crucial in navigating the evolving landscape of international cricket and ensuring its continued success on the world stage.
