Jishnu Dev Varma Appointed As New Governor Of Maharashtra
Mumbai, March 6, 2026: Veteran politician Jishnu Dev Varma has been appointed as the new Governor of Maharashtra. Prior to this appointment, he was serving as the Governor of Telangana.
The announcement was made by Droupadi Murmu, President of India, as part of a broader reshuffle involving governors in nine states. Dev Varma, who has extensive political and administrative experience, will now take charge of the constitutional post in Maharashtra.
Dev Varma is widely regarded as an experienced political leader from northeastern India and has played a significant role in the politics of Tripura. Before becoming a governor, he served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura from 2018 to 2023.
According to the official statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan, several other key appointments were also announced. R. N. Ravi, currently the Governor of Tamil Nadu, has been appointed as the new Governor of West Bengal following the resignation of C. V. Ananda Bose.
Meanwhile, Shiv Pratap Shukla, who was serving as Governor of Himachal Pradesh, has been given the additional responsibility of Governor of Telangana. Retired Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain has been appointed as the Governor of Bihar.
The reshuffle also includes changes in Union Territory leadership. Vinai Kumar Saxena has been appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, while Taranjit Singh Sandhu will serve as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
All the appointments will come into effect from the dates the appointees assume charge. Political observers say the appointment of a new governor in Maharashtra is significant, particularly with upcoming elections expected in the state.
Who is Jishnu Dev Varma?
Dev Varma is a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He joined the party in the early 1990s during the Ram Janmabhoomi Movement and later held several organisational roles, including serving as a national general secretary in the party. His long political career in Tripura and his administrative experience are seen as key factors behind his appointment to the constitutional post.
