Kamshet Skies Witnesses Soaring Popularity As Paragliders Flock To Picturesque Landscape

Nestled about 45 kilometers from Pune, the scenic town of Kamshet near Lonavala has become a hotspot for young paragliders, who are now taking to the skies in increasing numbers.

Reports indicate a significant surge in the enthusiasm for this adventurous activity, with three centers in Kamshet attracting a remarkable 120 to 130 amateur flyers per week, a notable increase from the 40 to 50 seen in 2018.

Participants in tandem flights, lasting a thrilling ten to fifteen minutes, have described the experience as an adrenaline rush. Kamshet has become a weekend destination for adventure seekers from Pune, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, and other cities.

Notably, Congressman Rahul Gandhi and six companions completed a three-day paragliding course at Rao’s Center in January 2008, adding to the town’s appeal for enthusiasts.

Paragliders emphasize the unique and liberating experience each jump offers, making it a once-a-year ritual for some. The sport has not only become a passion but also a lucrative income source for locals.

With the support of the Pune Air Force station, paragliding has emerged as a reliable revenue stream for experienced pilots in the surrounding villages. A local resident turned paragliding entrepreneur shared his success story, earning Rs 3 to 4 lakhs annually and performing hundreds of jumps.

The economic impact extends to locals providing services such as guest transportation, catering, and logistics. Landowners in designated landing areas also benefit from the thriving paragliding activity.

Kamshet’s natural beauty, featuring hills, historical forts, and an elevation of 2,000 feet above sea level, makes it an ideal location for paragliding. The town’s proximity to the old Pune-Mumbai highway, coupled with ample landing fields, contributes to its popularity among flyers seeking safe and enjoyable experiences.
