Khambatki Tunnel Trial Run Begins, Pune–Satara Travel Set To Become Faster And Smoother
New Khambataki Ghat Tunnel Nears Full Opening, Promises Safer and Faster Travel Between Pune and Satara
Rs.926-crore project enters final phase as eight-day trial opens new tunnel for Satara-to-Pune traffic on the Pune–Bengaluru highway.
The long-awaited new tunnel at Khambatki Ghat on the Pune–Bengaluru national highway is finally entering its most crucial phase, with a trial run scheduled to begin today, Saturday, January 17. For the next eight days, vehicles will be allowed to pass through the tunnel on an experimental basis as authorities assess its safety systems, traffic flow, and operational readiness.
The trial will be conducted in the presence of Satara District Collector Santosh Patil, District Police Superintendent Tushar Doshi, and Regional Highway Officer A. Srivastava. All technical and safety arrangements for the trial have been completed, and traffic management teams have been deployed to ensure smooth movement during the testing phase.
Once operational, the new tunnel is expected to significantly ease congestion at the Khambatki Ghat, which has long been one of the most accident-prone and traffic-heavy stretches between Pune and Satara. The project has been constructed at a cost of ₹926 crore with the primary objective of reducing travel time, preventing bottlenecks, and lowering accident rates.

Currently, traffic from Pune to Satara moves through the old ghat route using a single-lane system. After the new tunnel becomes functional, vehicles travelling from Satara to Pune will be diverted through this tunnel. This separation of traffic directions is expected to bring major relief to commuters and commercial transport vehicles.
Over the last few years, traffic on the Pune–Satara highway has increased sharply. Daily vehicle movement has risen from around 22,000 vehicles to nearly 55,000 vehicles. With this surge, incidents of congestion and accidents in the Khambatki Ghat region have also increased, making infrastructure expansion unavoidable.
The newly constructed Khambatki Tunnel project is part of a broader six-lane highway development covering a length of 6.3 kilometres, stretching from Vile village between Haripur and Khandala. Two separate tunnels have been planned under this project. Each tunnel is 16.16 metres wide and approximately 9.31 metres high, designed to accommodate three lanes of traffic in each direction.
Dual-carriageway traffic will be permitted through the tunnels, allowing uninterrupted movement of vehicles. In addition, pedestrian pathways have been provided on both sides inside the tunnel to ensure safety during emergencies or breakdown situations. An emergency road has also been built within the tunnel structure, which will help in clearing traffic quickly if any accident or vehicle failure occurs.
The tunnel has been equipped with modern safety and monitoring systems. These include ventilation systems, fire detection and suppression arrangements, CCTV surveillance, emergency communication setups, and traffic control mechanisms. These features are aimed at ensuring that the tunnel meets international safety standards and remains operational even during high traffic volumes.
Officials believe that after the trial period, the tunnel will be formally opened for regular traffic. Once that happens, the Pune–Satara journey time is expected to reduce considerably. Drivers and passengers who regularly face long delays in the Khambatki Ghat section are likely to experience smoother, faster, and safer travel.
For years, Khambatki Ghat has been notorious for traffic snarls, especially during weekends, festival seasons, and heavy rainfall. The steep gradients, sharp curves, and narrow roads made it a challenging stretch for both light vehicles and heavy transport carriers. The new tunnel is designed to bypass the most dangerous portions of the ghat, directly addressing these long-standing issues.
Authorities are closely monitoring the trial phase to observe vehicle movement patterns, response times during emergencies, and the overall efficiency of traffic flow. Any technical adjustments needed will be carried out before full-scale operations begin.
With the completion of this project, Khambatki Ghat is set to witness one of the biggest infrastructure upgrades in its history. The tunnel is expected not only to improve travel comfort but also to enhance road safety and boost connectivity between Pune, Satara, and the southern parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka.
