The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to retire the number that belonged to MS Dhoni during his international and IPL career, meaning that no player in Indian cricket will ever wear No. 7 on their jersey.

On August 15, 2020, Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket via an Instagram post. His final match for India was the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final. No cricketer from India has since worn number seven.

Just like retiring Dhoni’s jersey number, legend Sachin Tendulkar’s No 10 jersey is also to be retired by the BCCI. Following Tendulkar’s 2013 retirement from international cricket, no Indian player had worn the No. 10 jersey until Shardul Thakur’s 2017 appearance, at which point the BCCI decided to retire the number.

As per the International Cricket Council (ICC) rules, every player may select a number between 1 and 100, but Indian players are limited in their selections.

A BCCI official said that currently, the regular players and those in contention on the Indian team are identified by roughly sixty numbers. They, therefore, don’t give a player’s number to a new player even if they are absent from the team for around a year. That means a recent debutant has just 30-odd numbers to choose from.
