Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Sunday that civic body elections across the state are expected to be held in May 2025, pending a Supreme Court verdict on the inclusion of OBC reservation in municipal bodies. Addressing BJP workers at the party’s state convention, Fadnavis called for immediate preparation, emphasizing the critical role of local units.

Fadnavis indicated that the BJP is likely to contest the civic polls independently but instructed ministers and office bearers to avoid making adverse comments about allies in the Mahayuti alliance. “Despite potential solo participation, maintaining cordial relations with Shiv Sena and NCP workers is vital,” said a BJP MLA present at the convention.

The announcement comes as the opposition coalition, Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), faces internal discord following its assembly poll defeat. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut recently declared that his party would contest local body polls independently, surprising Congress and NCP allies.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also encouraged BJP workers to aim for dominance in all civic bodies in Maharashtra, following the party’s success in parliament and assembly elections.

Elections in 29 municipal corporations, 257 municipal councils, 26 zilla parishads, and 289 panchayats have been delayed for nearly three years due to the Supreme Court case on OBC reservations. In the meantime, administrators are managing these local bodies.

Fadnavis expressed confidence in receiving the court’s verdict by the end of January, giving the party around 100 days to prepare. “Local units will play a crucial role in ensuring our success in the upcoming elections,” said a BJP leader present at the event.
