Public Health Minister Professor Dr. Tanaji Sawant, in collaboration with the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT), has spearheaded a series of initiatives aimed at addressing the issue of female foeticide and improving the sex ratio in Maharashtra.

Previously, the PCPNDT operated a dedicated toll-free helpline (18002334475), which has now been integrated into the health department’s overarching helpline number 104, effective from February 22, 2024. This consolidated helpline service operates 24/7, providing a platform for individuals to register complaints and seek clarification on matters related to female foeticide prevention.

Complaints received through this helpline are promptly documented by designated officers and forwarded to the relevant authorities, including District Surgeons, Medical Superintendents, Medical Officers of Municipal Corporations (for urban areas), and the State Family Welfare Office in Pune. This concerted effort is aimed at ensuring swift action and effective implementation of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prevention of Sex Selection) Act of 1994.

Maintaining confidentiality is paramount, and individuals filing complaints have the option to remain anonymous. Should they choose to disclose their identity, their confidentiality is still upheld. Any complaints pertaining to violations of the PCPNDT Act result in immediate investigation and the initiation of legal proceedings against offenders.

To incentivize reporting and encourage public participation, the government has instituted a reward system wherein successful implementation of complaints may lead to a monetary reward of Rs. 1 Lakh for the complainant.

Moreover, plans are underway to launch a dedicated website to streamline the reporting process and provide additional resources and information on combating female foeticide.

Through these proactive measures, Maharashtra aims to curb the alarming trend of female foeticide and promote gender equality within the state.
