Maharashtra Govt To Create 519 Posts To Boost Lift Safety Checks; Third-Party Audit System Planned

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday announced that the Maharashtra government will strengthen the state’s lift inspection mechanism by creating 519 new posts to ensure better monitoring and faster emergency response.
Speaking in the state legislature during the ongoing Budget Session, the Chief Minister said nearly 2.10 lakh lifts are currently operational across Maharashtra, with another 25,000 recently approved. He noted that the existing workforce is insufficient to inspect such a large number of elevators, prompting the decision to increase manpower. However, he cautioned that even these additional posts may prove inadequate in the future given the rapid rise in installations.
Responding to queries raised by legislators Niranjan Davkhare and Sachin Ahir regarding maintenance of emergency lifts in housing societies, Fadnavis informed the House that comprehensive reforms would be introduced to enhance inspection efficiency.
The government also plans to introduce an authorised third-party inspection system for elevators, similar to the accredited fire safety audit model implemented by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. Under the proposed system, technical inspections will be mandatory, and valid inspection certificates must be displayed inside lifts along with clear records of inspection dates and certification validity.
A new bill has been introduced to enhance the powers of lift inspection authorities. Additionally, a high-level committee comprising the BMC Commissioner, municipal commissioners from across the state and electricity department officials will be formed to define maintenance standards, inspection frequency and technical norms. The committee is expected to draft a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) within six months.
