Maharashtra Rain: Thunderstorms Lash Pune, Solapur; IMD Issues Yellow Alert for 29 Districts Including Mumbai and Thane
Unseasonal thunderstorms and heavy rainfall continue to impact large parts of Maharashtra, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue fresh weather alerts. While four districts remain under an orange alert, a yellow alert has now been extended to 29 others, covering key urban areas such as Mumbai, Thane, and Pune.
Heavy Rains Pound Pune, Solapur, and Nearby Areas
The IMD has placed Pune, Solapur, Sangli, and Satara under an orange alert, signaling a high chance of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Pune has seen continuous downpours over the past three days. On Sunday, localities such as Aundh, Pashan, Sinhagad Road, Baner, Katraj, and Shivajinagar experienced intense rain, thunder, lightning, and even sleet. The persistent showers have led to a significant drop in daytime temperatures.
Yellow Alert for 29 Districts Across the State
A yellow alert, indicating moderate rainfall and thunderstorm activity, has been issued for 29 districts. These include:
Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Dhule, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Kolhapur, Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur, Dharashiv, Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha, Yavatmal, and Washim.
Several of these areas are witnessing intense rain, with some incidents resembling cloudbursts. In Beed’s Ralsangvi village (Ashti taluka), a sudden downpour triggered flash floods, submerging a bridge and cutting off access to four nearby villages.
Disruptions Across Maharashtra
Thunderstorms have affected normal life in many areas. Shirdi was hit by heavy rain and lightning, while Kolhapur saw strong winds and storm activity that disrupted travel and daily routines. Power outages and waterlogging were reported from various locations.
In Pune, moderate rainfall, thunder, and winds of 30–50 km/h are expected to continue over the next 48 hours, according to the IMD.
Mumbai, Konkan Belt Remain on Alert
Mumbai will stay under yellow alert on Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Thane and Raigad are also under similar warnings during this period. The alert for the Konkan region remains in effect until at least Wednesday.
Interior Maharashtra is also under watch, with yellow alerts in place for the next four days highlighting the widespread impact of the unseasonal rainfall.
Rain Spreads to Other States
IMD scientist Akhil Srivastava told ANI that parts of southern and central India—including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and central regions—will also face persistent rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the next five days.
Monsoon Update and Pre-Monsoon Activity
Pre-monsoon showers have begun in Mumbai, with increased rainfall activity since Saturday. The IMD forecasts above-normal rainfall for the June to September monsoon season. The southwest monsoon is expected to begin with its onset in Kerala—a key signal of seasonal transition.
Public Advisory
With widespread rainfall and storm warnings in place, residents across Maharashtra are advised to exercise caution, avoid waterlogged and flood-prone areas, and stay updated through official IMD bulletins and alerts.
