Maharashtra Weather News: The brief lull in rainfall over parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai and its suburbs, is likely to end soon as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of a fresh spell of heavy to very heavy rains across the state starting Saturday, July 5. The IMD has cautioned that the current calm is only the “lull before the storm.”

Mumbai, Konkan Brace for Heavy Showers

In the past 24 hours, Mumbai and nearby areas saw intermittent rain with cloudy skies. However, the IMD predicts that the intensity will pick up in the coming days. For July 4, Mumbai is likely to witness generally cloudy skies with spells of moderate to heavy rain in some areas.

In the Konkan region, heavy rains over the last two days have caused rivers and streams to overflow. Nagpur saw intense showers, while parts of Vidarbha experienced scattered rainfall. Now, as rainfall activity is expected to intensify again in the Ghats and Konkan belt, districts like Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Satara, and Kolhapur have been placed on high alert.

  • Orange alert: Issued for Raigad, Ratnagiri, Pune Ghats, and Satara, indicating heavy to very heavy rain.
  • Yellow alert: Issued for Sindhudurg and Kolhapur for moderate to heavy rain.

The rest of the state, including parts of Western Maharashtra, Marathwada, and North Maharashtra, may see cloudy weather with light rain.

Rain Intensity to Increase from July 5

While most regions are experiencing light to moderate showers at present, the IMD has predicted that rainfall will gain momentum across Maharashtra from July 5. Citizens and local authorities have been urged to take precautions, especially in flood-prone areas.

In Western India, Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Konkan, and Saurashtra are expected to see widespread heavy rain till July 9. Similarly, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Kerala, and Lakshadweep in Southern India are also likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period. In Northeast India, states like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram are forecast to receive moderate showers.

Dry Spell Worries Farmers in Dharashiv and Amravati

While some regions are witnessing incessant rain, others are struggling with water scarcity. In Dharashiv district, a prolonged dry spell over the last 15 days has threatened crops on over three lakh hectares of farmland. Soybean crops are wilting due to lack of water, and if rains fail to arrive soon, farmers may be forced into re-sowing.

In Amravati’s Chikhaldara, the Shakkar reservoir, which supplies water to the city, has almost dried up. Water is being supplied to residents on alternate days. The situation has also impacted the local tourism industry, with boating activities in the reservoir suspended, leaving visitors disappointed.
