The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and several nearby districts, forecasting moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds from May 6 to May 8. The alert covers Thane, Raigad, Palghar, and other parts of Maharashtra due to a western disturbance and interaction between westerly and easterly winds, which are contributing to increased atmospheric moisture.

According to the IMD, Mumbai may experience thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate rain, accompanied by gusty winds of 30–40 km/h. These weather conditions are expected to slightly lower daytime temperatures by 1–2°C, keeping them around 32–33°C.

Reason Behind Summer Showers

These unseasonal pre-monsoon showers are attributed to a low-level western disturbance and wind interactions, which are common during this time of the year, according to Sushma Nair, a scientist at IMD Mumbai. While some parts of interior Maharashtra have already received light rainfall, Mumbai remained dry on Monday despite cloudy skies and high humidity.

On Monday, Mumbai recorded a maximum temperature of 33.7°C and a minimum of 26.6°C. The IMD predicts light rainfall will continue through May 8, after which dry weather is expected to return.

Widespread Rain Across Maharashtra

Similar weather patterns are forecast for neighboring districts like Thane, Palghar, and Raigad, with a high likelihood of thunderstorms continuing until Wednesday. Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are also expected to see rain and thundershowers midweek.

In Madhya Maharashtra, yellow alerts are active for districts including Dhule, Nandurbar, Nashik, Jalgaon, Pune, Satara, and Sangli until Wednesday. Rainfall is likely in Kolhapur, Solapur, and Sangli on Thursday. Other regions like Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Beed, and Jalna are forecast to receive rain for the next two days, while Nanded and Latur may see showers on Wednesday and Thursday.
