With upcoming elections in Maharashtra, the spotlight is on who will emerge victorious—Mahayuti or MVA—and who will assume the role of Chief Minister. In just two months, voters will decide the fate of the state’s leadership, sparking intense speculation and political maneuvering.

Current Contenders in the Ruling Alliance

Within the ruling alliance, close aides of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde are confident of retaining power, buoyed by the benefits provided to the populace. They believe Shinde will continue in his role. However, BJP legislators argue that their party will secure more seats, making their candidate the natural choice for CM. Speculations are rife about whether Devendra Fadnavis will return to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) or if the party will select a new face, such as Pankaja Munde or Vinod Tawde. Some suggest a surprise candidate might emerge, as seen in past elections in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Meanwhile, NCP supporters are pushing for Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar to take the helm.

The Opposition’s Battle

The opposition is also in fierce contention. Shiv Sena (UBT) insists on Uddhav Thackeray as the MVA’s face. Congress, having secured the most Lok Sabha seats in the state, believes they will lead the next government. Top contenders include state Congress chief Nana Patole, legislative unit head Balasaheb Thorat, and former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. Some suggest a young Maratha leader may be chosen to secure long-term interests. If the Sharad Pawar-led NCP has a say, Supriya Sule is a likely candidate, though Jayant Patil is also a potential pick due to his governmental experience.

Historical Surprises

Historically, the selection of Maharashtra’s Chief Ministers has often been unpredictable, with only Ashok Chavan in 2009 and Devendra Fadnavis in 2014 being predictable choices. Even in 2022, when the MVA government fell, many expected Fadnavis to be CM, but Shinde was chosen instead. Interestingly, no incumbent Chief Minister, except Ashok Chavan, has retained their position in the last three decades.

Pawar Family Tensions

In a recent Pune District Planning Development Council (DPDC) meeting, a significant clash occurred between Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and his uncle, Sharad Pawar. Ajit cited rules to prevent Sharad from questioning fund distribution, a move seen as disrespectful by NCP (SP) leaders. This incident has become a major talking point in state politics, with predictions that Ajit may face repercussions for his actions.

Sharad Pawar’s Candidate Announcements

Sharad Pawar has already begun announcing candidates for the assembly elections, often during public meetings. His selections include Rohit Patil in Sangli, Devdutt Nikam in Pune, Amit Bhangre in Ahmednagar, and possibly Madhav Kinhalkar in Bhokar. Most of Pawar’s picks are young, reflecting his strategy to inject new energy into the party.

Political Drama Unfolds

In a recent event promoting the sequel to the biopic on Shiv Sena leader Anand Dighe, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis hinted at producing a movie to expose certain individuals. His remark adds another layer of intrigue to Maharashtra’s already dynamic political landscape.

As Maharashtra approaches the elections, the political atmosphere is charged with anticipation and uncertainty. Who will lead the state next remains a hotly debated question.
