If your air cooler is blowing warm or weak air, a few simple maintenance and placement changes can sharply improve cooling performance during peak summer heat.

As temperatures rise, many households depend on air coolers for affordable relief. But a common complaint every summer is the same — the cooler runs, yet the air does not feel cold enough. Experts say this often happens because of poor airflow, dirty cooling pads, low water levels or incorrect placement.

One of the most important fixes is to keep the cooling pads clean. Dust, dirt and mineral deposits block water absorption and reduce evaporation, which is the main process that cools the air. Cleaning or replacing grass pads or honeycomb pads regularly can restore better cooling.

Maintaining the right water level is equally important. If the tank does not have enough water, the pads stay dry and cooling drops quickly. Users should check water levels regularly, especially during long hours of daytime use.

Adding ice or chilled water can also give temporary extra cooling. Many coolers include ice chambers or tanks designed for this purpose. However, moderate use is better than overfilling, as excessive ice can slow normal evaporation in some models.

Placement of the cooler can make a major difference. Air coolers work best near a window, balcony door or another source of fresh air. Unlike air conditioners, coolers need outside airflow to function properly. Keeping the unit in a closed room can increase humidity and reduce cooling efficiency.

Ventilation inside the room is also necessary. Leave another window or door slightly open so warm humid air can escape while fresh air enters. Cross-ventilation helps maintain a stronger cooling effect.

If cooling remains weak, check whether the motor and fan are functioning properly. Slow fan speed, blocked blades or worn-out components can reduce airflow significantly.

Regular cleaning of the tank and body also improves efficiency. Stagnant water, dust buildup and neglected servicing can reduce performance and create odour problems over time.

Experts say coolers are most effective in dry heat conditions and may feel less powerful during very humid weather.

With simple weekly maintenance and smarter placement, an ordinary air cooler can perform far better without increasing electricity costs.

Disclaimer: Cooling results depend on room size, humidity, cooler type, maintenance condition and outdoor weather.
