MPCB To Monitor Noise Levels At 200 Pune Sites During Ganesh Festival As Per NGT Order
Pune: In response to concerns over noise pollution during the Ganesh festival, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has been tasked with monitoring noise levels at 200 key locations across Pune. This initiative follows a directive from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Western Zone, which called for real-time noise monitoring and limits on loudspeaker usage at Ganesh mandals.
Audiologists had earlier appealed for stricter noise control measures, particularly addressing the excessive use of loudspeakers and public address systems during the festival.
Jagannath Salunkhe, Regional Officer of MPCB Pune, stated that sound level meters have been deployed, and the noise levels are currently under control. He added that if high decibel levels are detected, Ganesh mandal organizers will be instructed to lower the volume. “The mandal authorities have cooperated, and monitoring will be conducted daily from 6 PM to 10 PM,” Salunkhe said.
Doctors warn that exposure to noise levels above 85 decibels can cause ear damage in 20% of individuals, with children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions being particularly vulnerable.
