Mumbai Bhandup Construction Site Tragedy: One Dead, Several Injured After Group Falls Into Open SRA Pit
Late-night chaos near Mumbai’s Bhandup (West) Metro Mall area turned tragic when a group of people accidentally plunged into an open excavation at an under-construction Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) building site, leaving one dead and several injured.
The incident occurred close to Janata Market near Metro Mall, in the vicinity of the Matoshri Marriage Hall, when 11 individuals reportedly fell into a pit at the construction location. Early inputs suggest confusion over timing, with the Mumbai Fire Brigade receiving alerts between 10:23 pm and 11:29 pm on Thursday, April 23, 2026.
Emergency response teams, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, local police, 108 ambulance services, and ward officials, quickly reached the scene and carried out rescue efforts. By Friday morning (around 8:00 am), authorities confirmed that operations and follow-up actions were still ongoing.
Out of the 11 injured persons, one individual, identified as 25-year-old Bhalchandra Falle, was declared dead after being taken to Fortis Hospital. Two others continue to receive treatment in hospitals, while the remaining victims were discharged after medical attention.
Hospital-wise details indicate that at Criticare Hospital, Shreyas Surve (25) remains admitted but stable, while six patients were treated and released. At Agarwal Hospital, 43-year-old Harishankar Karva is also admitted in stable condition. Additional reports state that three injured persons treated at Fortis Hospital have been discharged after care, though overall records mention eight discharges in total.
