Mumbai, Maharashtra: In a move aimed at making public transport in Mumbai more efficient and commuter-friendly, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking has launched real-time bus tracking on Google Maps. The service was officially inaugurated at Mantralaya by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, marking a significant step in the city’s push for smarter urban mobility. The programme also saw chief minister Devendra Fadnavis chairing the event.

Through this new integration, commuters can now view accurate, real-time information about BEST buses directly on Google Maps. The feature provides details such as bus routes, estimated arrival times, and the expected duration of travel — making it easier for passengers to plan their journeys and reduce waiting time.

The initiative, a result of collaboration between BEST and Google, is part of an ongoing effort to modernize Mumbai’s public transportation system. Officials expect the new feature to significantly improve the daily commuting experience and boost the use of public buses across the city.

The service is available in English, Marathi, and Hindi, catering to the diverse population of Mumbai. Instructions and promotional materials will also be displayed at all bus stops to inform commuters about the new system and guide them in using it effectively.

Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, while inaugurating the facility, emphasized the importance of adopting smart solutions to address Mumbai’s complex traffic and commuting challenges. Senior officials from BEST and representatives from Google were also present during the launch.

The integration is expected to increase passenger trust in the public transport system by offering more predictable and transparent travel options. This initiative reflects the state government’s continued commitment to leveraging technology to improve the quality of life in urban areas.
