Mumbai Local Passes Move From UTS To RailOne App: What Changes For Daily Commuters

Monthly, quarterly and half-yearly local train passes can now be issued only via the RailOne app; existing UTS passes remain valid till expiry

Mumbai’s suburban railway commuters will now need to shift to a new digital platform for season passes, as the Indian Railways has officially discontinued the monthly, quarterly and half-yearly pass facility on the UTS (Unreserved Ticketing System) app. From the start of the new year, all new local train passes for Mumbai must be obtained exclusively through the newly launched RailOne app.

The move affects lakhs of daily commuters who rely on Mumbai local trains across Central and Western Railways, especially office-goers and students who have long used the UTS app for season tickets.

The Railway Ministry has clarified that the UTS app has not been fully shut down. Passengers can still use it to purchase unreserved point-to-point tickets for daily travel. However, the option to issue or renew season passes has been permanently removed from UTS.

For passengers who already hold a valid monthly pass issued through the UTS app, there is no immediate disruption. Existing passes will continue to remain valid until their expiry date and can be shown to ticket inspectors as usual. Once the pass expires, commuters must register on the RailOne app to obtain a new one.

RailOne has been introduced as a unified digital platform under the government’s “One Nation, One App” approach. The aim is to bring multiple railway-related services under a single application, reducing dependence on separate apps for different functions. Apart from issuing local train passes, RailOne is designed to offer features such as unreserved ticket booking, live train status, platform information and other passenger services.

To get a new pass, commuters are required to download the RailOne app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and complete a one-time registration process. The app supports UPI, net banking and card payments, and also includes an in-app wallet facility. Railway officials have stated that a faster payment gateway has been integrated to minimise failed transactions and reduce queues at station ticket counters during peak hours.

Central and Western Railway authorities have urged commuters to adopt the new app quickly, saying it will help ease congestion at booking windows and streamline pass issuance. While the transition may require some adjustment, officials maintain that RailOne is intended to make daily travel more efficient in the long run.

For Mumbai’s local train users, the key takeaway is clear: UTS remains usable for single journeys, but all season pass needs, new or renewal, must now be handled through RailOne.
