Mumbai | May 16, 2025: In a significant step toward modernizing public transportation, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) will soon introduce 3,000 AI-powered “Smart Buses” across the state. These buses, equipped with cutting-edge technology, aim to enhance passenger safety, punctuality, and travel comfort.

The initiative was announced following a high-level meeting held with bus manufacturing companies. The meeting was chaired by MSRTC Vice-Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Madhav Kusekar and attended by key department officials and representatives from manufacturing firms.

The new fleet, including the iconic red ‘Lalpari’ buses, will feature AI-based driver monitoring cameras, GPS tracking, LED TVs, Wi-Fi connectivity, automatic passenger counting systems, and driver breath analyser devices. An advanced anti-theft bus locking mechanism will also be integrated to prevent unauthorized access, particularly when buses are stationed or parked.

In light of recent security concerns, especially the incident at Swargate Bus Stand, MSRTC is placing a stronger emphasis on in-transit safety. CCTV cameras will be installed inside the buses to monitor both passenger activities and driver behavior—acting as a “third eye” to ensure safety and accountability.

To further boost passenger experience and communication, internal LED screens will broadcast updates, including government messages and real-time news. External LED panels will be used for advertising, adding a new revenue stream for MSRTC.

Amid rising temperatures and recent fire incidents involving buses, the smart fleet will also include foam-based fire suppression systems. These systems will automatically detect heat zones and extinguish potential fires immediately.

The comprehensive smart upgrade is expected to reduce accidents, improve schedule adherence, and create a more secure, efficient travel experience. “With this move, MSRTC is set to redefine public transport for a safer and smarter Maharashtra,” said Dr. Kusekar.
