PUNE: The quintessence of travel in India can be succinctly captured in one word that is diversity. This diversity transcends not only landscapes and cultures but also encompasses a wide range of experiences that can be had.

Indian Railways, the backbone of travel in the country, has recently introduced a novel and captivating offering: Sleeping Pods, situated in the serene environs of Matheran, a picturesque hill station in the Western Ghats.

The Sleeping Pods, a unique and affordable lodging option, will be built in close proximity to the Matheran railway station, falling under the jurisdiction of Central Railway’s Mumbai Division. This innovation has already been previewed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) Railway station. Imagine disembarking from the train and strolling a short distance to a haven of tranquility and repose. This is precisely what the Sleeping Pods provide – comfort and convenience amidst the breath taking beauty of Matheran.

The construction of the Sleeping Pods is not merely a plan; it is already underway. An open online tender has been published, and the E-Auction will be finalized on September 25, 2023. The facility will span an area of 758.77 square meters and will be constructed on a ‘Built, Operate and Transfer’ basis.

However, the Sleeping Pods offer more than just a place to rest one’s head.

Expect a gamut of contemporary amenities, including in-house pantry services, lifts, and even guides for trekking activities. It is designed to be an experience, not just a place to sojourn.

It is the nearest major tourist destination for Mumbaikars and a place that guarantees a profound connection with nature. A trip to Matheran is incomplete without a ride on the iconic Toy train, meandering through the verdant landscapes, filling you with awe and wonder.
