Mumbai to Build 'Mumbai Eye' Inspired by London Eye to Boost Tourism
The Mumbai civic authorities are planning to install a massive Ferris wheel, drawing inspiration from the iconic London Eye. The London Eye, situated on the River Thames, stands at an impressive 135 meters tall, and its Mumbai counterpart aims to replicate its grandeur.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has unveiled its largest-ever budget, totaling over Rs 74,000 crore for the financial year 2025-26.
Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani hailed it as the “biggest budget” in BMC’s history. A major highlight of this year’s budget is the proposed ‘Mumbai Eye’ project, featuring a giant Ferris wheel inspired by London’s iconic landmark. This ambitious initiative aims to boost tourism in the city.
According to the BMC, the Mumbai Eye project will be developed through a public-private partnership (PPP) model. While the initiative has been announced, key details are still pending, including budget allocation and site selection. The project is expected to occupy approximately two to three acres of land, with further details to be finalized in due course.

The ‘Mumbai Eye’ promises to provide a breathtaking, bird’s-eye perspective of the city. This giant Ferris wheel is slated to feature state-of-the-art, air-conditioned, and fully enclosed passenger capsules, ensuring a comfortable and thrilling experience for visitors.
The concept of the Mumbai Eye was initially floated in 2008 by Shiv Sena leader Ravindra Waikar. The idea gained momentum in 2022 when the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) proposed constructing the giant Ferris wheel at the Bandra Reclamation promenade. However, the plan was temporarily shelved due to opposition from local residents, and the project’s future remained uncertain until its recent revival.
The commissioner emphasized that the newly unveiled “citizen-centric” budget and said, “It reflects our (BMC) commitment to innovation, inclusivity and sustainability while providing the best civic services and amenities to the citizens at free or minimum cost and in real time”.
The Rs 74,427.41 crore budget is built around six core pillars, which include:
- · Fiscal discipline and sustainability
- · Upgrading infrastructure and services
- · Developing a high-quality education system
- · Fostering a clean and sustainable environment
- · Implementing social initiatives
- · Enhancing governance and administrative efficiency
These pillars form the foundation of the budget, guiding the allocation of resources to drive growth, development, and improvement in the city.
