The much-anticipated Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) is expected to reach a major milestone on January 12 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate it.

With a length of almost 22 km, which includes a striking 16.5 km span over the sea, the MTHL will be the longest sea bridge in the nation and the 12th longest globally.

Starting in south Mumbai at Sewri, continuing through Thane Creek and ending at Chirle on the outskirts of Navi Mumbai, this engineering marvel—which has been under development since 2018—is set to revolutionize connectivity in the area.

The PM has been invited by the state government to attend the bridge’s inauguration on January 12, according to a top official in the state government.

With two tenders already released—one for an event management company to supervise the inauguration and another for a project management consultant to oversee bridge operations and maintenance for the next two years—the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is getting ready for the big day with great diligence.

Although toll prices have not yet been set, MMRDA representatives estimate that they will likely range from Rs 250 to Rs 300 for passenger cars, with possibly higher amounts for freight traffic. At an estimated cost of Rs 17,843 crore, the six-lane bridge with a 100 kmph speed limit will serve as a vital conduit between Sewri in Mumbai and Shivaji Nagar, Jassi, and Chirle on National Highway 4B in Navi Mumbai. It is anticipated to accommodate 70,000 vehicles per day.

Advanced features like artificial intelligence-based cameras that quickly notify the control room in the event of a vehicle breakdown are incorporated into the MTHL. This technology guarantees prompt action, avoiding sustained carriageway congestion.
