Navi Mumbai Set for Faster Commutes: 9.7 km Kharghar Coastal Road to Cut Travel Time from 45 Minutes to Just 10
Navi Mumbai is gearing up for a major upgrade in its road infrastructure, with a new coastal corridor that promises to dramatically improve how people move across the city. Designed to support the region’s rapid urban growth and future traffic demands, the Kharghar Coastal Road (KCR) is emerging as a crucial link that will reshape daily travel—especially for those heading to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.
Planned as one of two coastal routes to enhance airport connectivity, the KCR will stretch 9.678 kilometres along the Panvel Creek, forming a direct connection between Kharghar, CBD Belapur, and Nerul. With an estimated investment of ₹1,020.70 crore, the project aims to deliver smoother, faster, and more efficient intra-city travel.
Project layout and route details
The road is being developed in two phases. The first segment will connect Kharghar to CBD Belapur, while the second will extend from CBD Belapur to the Nerul Water Transport Jetty.
Starting from Jalmarg in Sector 16, Kharghar, the route will pass near the PAY Housing Scheme and Kharghar railway station, continue through Sector 15 in CBD Belapur, and conclude near Delhi Public School in Nerul. To address environmental concerns, certain portions of the alignment have been shifted slightly inland to minimise the impact on mangroves and the surrounding creek ecosystem.

Why this road matters
The Kharghar Coastal Road is expected to play a key role in strengthening connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. By linking major routes such as the Sion–Panvel Expressway and Palm Beach Road, it will provide a seamless travel corridor between important residential and commercial zones.
The project is also closely aligned with Navi Mumbai’s future development plans. It will support access to upcoming housing projects and business hubs, including the International Corporate Park in Kharghar. With better road infrastructure in place, these areas are likely to see increased activity and growth.
One of the biggest advantages for commuters will be the significant reduction in travel time between Kharghar, CBD Belapur, and Nerul—potentially bringing down journeys from around 45 minutes to just 10 minutes in some cases.
Construction progress and timeline
The project is being executed by J Kumar and is scheduled for completion by 2028. Currently, work is in its initial stages. In March, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) began shifting electrical utilities that fall along the proposed alignment, marking the start of on-ground preparations.
