On 11.3.2024, the construction of a new kitchen for inmates in Satara District Jail was completed with funds received through the District Planning Committee and it was inaugurated by MLA Chhatrapati Shivendrasinhraje Bhosle and Swati Sathe, Deputy Inspector General of Jails, Pune Division.

As per further information, there are about 350 male and female prisoners in Satara District Jail and the official capacity of this jail is only 168. Despite this, due to the increasing number, prisons are becoming more than double the incarceration capacity.

MLA Shrimant Chhatrapati Shivendrasinharaje Bhosale expressed the feeling that the Satara District Jail is in the center of the city and therefore, as a matter of security and as a hindrance to the citizens, it is necessary to build a new jail at a safe place away from the city.

According to this, the Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Smt. Swati Sathe also said that this is a district jail and instead of this, it is very necessary to have a central jail (Central Jail). This will facilitate controlling the excess number of detentions in Yerawada Central Jail and Kolhapur Central Jail and classifying the inmates of those jails in Satara Central Jail. He expressed the feeling that this will help reduce the security issue and stress on the administration.

On the occasion of the recent International Women’s Day, Sangita Patil, president of Innerwheel Club Panchgani and her team, gifted a new sewing machine to the female inmates of the Satara District Jail and also imparted training to the female inmates in sewing blouses, petticoats, cloth bags, etc. The program was inaugurated by Swati Sathe, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons.

After inaugurating the new kitchen, other aspects of the jail were also inspected by Swati Sathe, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons and MLA Chhatrapati Shivendrasinharaje Bhosale. In which information was also taken about the newly introduced “kiosk system” for inmates in jails. By reviewing the security of the jail, the new activities in the jail were also reviewed. The beautification of the jail was also looked into. Superintendent of Jails Shemkant Shedge and his team were praised for handling all these matters including jail security very skilfully.
