Only confirmed tickets, airline-like fares and faster journeys as Indian Railways prepares to roll out its premium overnight train service.

Indian Railways is set to introduce a major change in long-distance rail travel with the launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express. Unlike traditional express trains, this premium service will not allow waiting list or RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) tickets. Only confirmed tickets will be issued, marking a first for Indian railways’ overnight train segment.

According to a circular issued by the Railway Board on January 9, all berths in the Vande Bharat Sleeper will be available from the first day of the Advance Reservation Period (ARP), and no partially confirmed, waitlisted or RAC tickets will be generated. This move is aimed at offering passengers certainty in travel and eliminating last-minute cancellations or uncertainty over seat availability.

The new train is scheduled to debut on the Howrah–Guwahati route, a crucial corridor connecting eastern and northeastern India. It is expected to significantly reduce travel time while offering enhanced comfort and safety features. Though the train is designed for speeds of up to 180 kmph, it will operate at a maximum of 130 kmph in the initial phase for safety reasons. This is still much faster than conventional long-distance trains such as the Rajdhani, which average around 80–90 kmph.

However, this comfort and speed will come at a premium. The fare structure of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express is higher than that of existing premium trains like the Rajdhani. Indian Railways has fixed a minimum chargeable distance of 400 km, meaning passengers will have to pay for at least 400 km even if their journey is shorter.

The per-kilometre fares have been set as follows:
₹2.4 per km for 3AC
₹3.1 per km for 2AC
₹3.8 per km for 1AC

For the minimum distance of 400 km, fares will be:
₹960 for 3AC
₹1,240 for 2AC
₹1,520 for 1AC

GST will be charged separately.

On the Howrah–Guwahati route, which is approximately 1,000 km, ticket prices will be:
₹2,400 for 3AC
₹3,100 for 2AC
₹3,800 for 1AC

For longer journeys, the fares rise proportionately. A 2,000-km trip would cost:
₹4,800 for 3AC
₹6,200 for 2AC
₹7,600 for 1AC

For the longest operational distance of around 3,500 km, a 1AC ticket could go up to approximately ₹13,300, making it one of the costliest train journeys in the country, comparable to economy-class air travel on some routes.

When compared with Rajdhani Express fares, the difference becomes clear. For example, Rajdhani charges around ₹2.10 per km for 3AC, ₹2.85 for 2AC and ₹3.53 for 1AC, which is lower than the Vande Bharat Sleeper rates. On the Howrah–Guwahati route, the Saraighat Express currently charges around ₹1,410 for 3AC, ₹1,985 for 2AC and ₹3,320 for 1AC, significantly cheaper than the upcoming Vande Bharat service.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will have 16 coaches in total. These include 11 coaches of 3AC, four of 2AC and one of 1AC. Like other long-distance trains, it will also have reserved quotas for women, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and railway staff.

In terms of technology and safety, the train is equipped with the Kavach automatic train protection system, which helps prevent collisions and overspeeding. It also features an emergency talk-back system for direct communication with the driver, automatic doors with vestibules, improved suspension for smoother travel, noise-reduction design, and better-designed berths for overnight comfort. Cleanliness has been enhanced through disinfectant technologies, and driver cabins are fitted with advanced control systems.

Railway officials believe this model of confirmed-only booking will attract passengers who prefer certainty and premium services, even at higher prices. The move also aligns Indian Railways closer to airline-style operations, where every seat sold is guaranteed.

With faster travel, modern amenities and a strict no-waitlist policy, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express is poised to redefine overnight train journeys in India, catering primarily to passengers willing to pay extra for comfort, speed and assured reservations.
