Lucknow: A viral post showing leopards roaming Lucknow’s residential areas sparked fear among residents  until police discovered the images were AI-generated, not real.

Residents of Lucknow were left terrified this week after videos and images claiming to show leopards prowling city neighbourhoods went viral on social media. The visuals, reportedly shared from areas including AshianaRuchi Khand, and Gomti Nagar, quickly triggered panic, as many believed the wild cats had entered residential zones.

Authorities rushed to investigate. The forest department began combing the mentioned areas, while police teams reviewed CCTV footage from homes and shops. Parents refused to send their children to school, and many residents stayed indoors, fearing for their safety. But what began as a potential wildlife emergency soon turned into a case of digital deception.

Upon close inspection, officials discovered that the leopard visuals were completely fake, created using artificial intelligence (AI). No paw prints, fur, or traces of wild animals were found during searches. The panic that had gripped entire localities turned out to be the result of a digital prank gone wrong.

The police later detained a young man who admitted to generating and circulating the AI-edited clips to make them appear real. A formal complaint has been filed at the Ashiana police station, and further legal action is underway.

Meanwhile, the incident has reignited debate about the misuse of AI tools and the urgent need for regulations on digital content. One social media user commented, “The government should frame a rule that any AI-generated image or video must carry a disclaimer. It’ll prevent unnecessary panic and misinformation.”

Others responded with humour and sarcasm. “AI can generate images but not bail money,” one user quipped. Another added, “From Photoshop to Handcuffshop, that escalated fast.”

Several users also pointed out the dangers of using emerging technologies irresponsibly. “AI is in the wrong hands,” one post read, while another remarked, “Now the guy knows AI should be for learning, not pranks.”

The police have confirmed that the videos were entirely fabricated and no leopards were ever present in Lucknow’s residential areas. However, the viral hoax served as a sobering reminder of how quickly AI-generated misinformation can spread and the real-world consequences it can create.
