Passenger detained for smoking on Delhi-Pune Indigo Flight, Pune Police Take Action
A 38-year-old man was detained by Pune police after allegedly smoking a cigarette in the lavatory of an Indigo Airlines flight traveling from Delhi to Pune. The incident, which breached critical aviation safety protocols, occurred on flight number 2618 and was reported when the plane landed at Pune Airport around 1:00 AM on Monday.
Naqshab Jahangir, a resident of Okhla Vihar in New Delhi, was found in possession of a lighter and parts of a smoked cigarette. The aircraft crew noticed smoke in the lavatory around 12:30 AM and discovered the discarded cigarette parts and lighter after a thorough check. Despite strict no-smoking regulations and clear pre-flight announcements, Jahangir lit the cigarette while the flight was in midair.
Indigo Airlines cabin crew, including attendants Ginny Sachdev and Neelima, alerted the flight captain, who then informed Tushar Andhare, the Security Manager at Pune Airport. Upon landing, Jahangir was handed over to the authorities. An FIR was filed at Vimantal police station, charging Jahangir under section 25 of The Aircraft Rules, 1937, and section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, for actions endangering the safety of others.
Pune police, including Security Executive Pratik Pawale, swiftly responded to the incident. They confiscated the lighter and booked Jahangir, who has been summoned to appear for further investigation. This incident underscores the serious risks associated with smoking on flights and highlights the importance of compliance with aviation safety regulations.
