The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is taking significant steps to handle waste disposal effectively by initiating “Hotel Waste to Biogas.’ In the past, there wasn’t a proper system to manage large quantities of food and wet waste from hotels, restaurants and various areas. To address this issue, “Hotel Waste to Biogas’ has been established in Moshi under the Swachh Bharat Yojana.

This plant converts wet waste from hotels into biogas, which is turned into CNG. The produced CNG will fuel vehicles used for waste transportation, cutting down on municipal fuel costs. Currently, the plant can handle 50 tonnes of waste per day, but plans are underway to increase its capacity to 200 tonnes per day over the next 15 years. By processing hotel and wet waste, the project aims to mitigate foul odours in the area and promote zero-waste practices.

All hotels, restaurants, eateries and other establishments within the municipal limits contribute to this initiative by segregating their wet waste, which is collected using specialized GPS-equipped vehicles.

As per Sanjay Kulkarni, Joint City Engineer, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), ” The plant has been developed for Hotel Waste with the capacity of 50 tonnes per day. Through this initiative, the hotel waste will be disposed of scientifically and will generate Compressed Biogas (CBG) and convert it into Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), which will further benefit the automobile industries.”

The project not only addresses waste management but also contributes to environmental sustainability by utilizing biogas for transportation purposes. Moreover, surplus gas can be sold in the open market, providing additional benefits to the municipality.

Under the guidance of Shekhar Singh, Commissioner of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, this initiative marks a significant stride towards a cleaner and more sustainable city.
