Zika cases are being reported in the surroundings, which is a cause of concern

The amount of water hyacinth over the Indrayani, Mula and Pavana rivers flowing within the limits of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has increased. So, the members of Pimpri-Chinchwad-Moshi housing society federation wrote a letter to PCMC Commissioner Sekhar Singh requesting him to get the water hyacinth removed.

The letter states, “Water hyacinth has grown in large quantities over Indrayani, Pavana and Mula rivers flowing through Pimpri Chinchwad city. Therefore, a large number of mosquitoes are breeding there. There are Zika cases being reported in the surroundings, which is a cause of concern.”

Zika is a disease caused by the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito that breeds in freshwater. And this mosquito is mainly bred in the river currents with these aquatic plants. Since it is an important issue for the health of the citizens, it is requested to immediately remove the hyacinth from these three rivers. Otherwise, the Zika disease is likely to spread widely, the letter said.

Additionally, the letter states that the chemical water produced by the companies and factories around these rivers is released into the river basin. Due to this, the river water is getting polluted to a great extent. Hence, it is requested to take action on the companies and factories concerned. They must be told to keep the sanctity of the rivers intact.

Sanjeevan Sangale, president of Pimpri-Chinchwad-Moshi housing society federation said, “Water hyacinth over Indrayani river has increased due to which mosquitoes in the area have increased. As cases of Zika virus are being reported, we are requesting the authorities to remove the water hyacinth. The mosquitoes which cause Zika disease breed on this water hyacinth. We have made requests several times earlier too. This time we have also written to the Maharashtra Chief Minister and Health Minister also.”
