Pune/Pimpri, 4 September, 2024 : A significant decision has been made to enhance tree conservation within the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) limits. PMRDA has established a Tree Authority Committee, making it mandatory to obtain prior approval from the Tree Authority before acquiring a completion certificate for construction projects. This decision, taken in a meeting chaired by Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase, is expected to significantly aid tree conservation efforts.

The Tree Authority Committee has been formed under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975. Henceforth, obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for tree felling and the final occupancy certificate will require prior approval from the Tree Authority. Given that development projects in the PMRDA area cover vast rural regions, it has also been decided to reduce the previously set deposit amount for tree conservation.

According to the standards set under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975, if the conditions for tree plantation are not met, a deposit per tree must be made. The Tree Authority will issue the final NOC only after ensuring that tree plantation is carried out as per the guidelines. The deposit collected at the time of final occupancy or land demarcation will be refunded based on the tree inspection at that time, as decided by PMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner and Tree Authority Committee Chairman, Dr. Yogesh Mhase.
