PMRDA’s Indrayani River Improvement Project Approved By State Government; Submitted For Approval To Central Government

Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA)’s proposal regarding Indrayani River Improvement Project has been accepted by the Maharashtra government. It has been sent to the Central government for approval.

As per further information shared by Ashok Bhalkar, Chief Engineer, Engineering Department, PMRDA, Indrayani River improvement project has been proposed by PMRDA. This project includes Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Area and other 46 villages. The important pilgrimage sites of Dehu and Alandi are situated on the banks of the river Indrayani.

The Indrayani River has been polluted due to discharge of domestic and industrial sewage, sludge. To suggest remedial plan for cleaning and purification of river bed. Planning to develop riverfronts at prime locations along river banks. To assess the feasibility of providing a water transport system in the river, and also to propose water transport with provision for provision of gates if required.

Preparation of Pre-Feasibility Report, Master Plan and Detailed Project Report (DPR). Under the said project, a total of 54 villages and towns on both banks of the Indrayani River have been considered while planning to bring the pollution of the river under control by processing the waste water.

These mainly include three Municipal Councils namely Lonavala, Talegaon Dabhade and Alandi, two Nagar Panchayats namely Vadgaon and Dehu, Dehu Cantonment Board, three Gram Panchayats with a population of more than 15,000 and 46 other Gram Panchayats. The said proposal has been submitted to the National Directorate of River Protection. The pollution control work will be funded by the central and state governments in the ratio of 60:40 per cent of the capital cost.

At present, the final detailed project report of 577.16 crores has been submitted to the Government of Maharashtra. The proposal is also expected to be approved at the central government level soon.
