Praise from Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan for Mumbai’s coastal road has spiralled into a political battleground between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena, with each party jostling to claim credit for the project’s success.

Bachchan’s appreciation for the coastal road triggered a flurry of messages from political parties, all eager to associate themselves with the development work.

The BJP wasted no time in crediting the NDA government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra’s former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, for the initiative.

In a post on X, the BJP stated, “We aim to honour all the guarantees made. The few moments of happiness shared by respected citizens like you on these roads are a testament to the devotion and hard work of everyone involved with this initiative.”

However, Shiv Sena MLA Aaditya Thackeray quickly rebutted the BJP’s claims, asserting that the coastal road project was primarily executed under the leadership of former chief minister Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray through the BMC.

Thackeray criticized the BJP for allegedly delaying permissions from the Union Environment Ministry for two years, thereby obstructing the project’s progress.

In a pointed tweet, Thackeray accused the BJP of desperation for credit and emphasized that the coastal road had only been partially opened despite the delays. He claimed that had the MVA government been in power, the project would have been completed without cost escalation by December 2023.

Thackeray’s response underscored the ongoing political rift between the BJP and Shiv Sena, with each party striving to assert its role in Mumbai’s development projects.
