An eight-member expert committee has been formed by the The Maharahtra state government’s department of environment and climate change, which has asked the chairman of Maharashtra Tree Authority to review the proposed tree-cutting for the construction of the Sadhu Vaswani Railway overbridge in Pune. The committee, comprising members from various departments, including the Director of the Environment Department, Scientific Officer, Project Director of Majhi Vasundhara Abhiyan, and members from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), will assess the impact of the project on the environment and submit a report to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) today on August 14 at 3 PM. A complaint was registered by Ameet Singh, an environmental expert against the Pune Municipal Corporation for cutting down 96 trees towards the construction of new Sadhu Vaswani overbridge.

The committee is scheduled to visit the site on August 14 and will conduct a thorough inspection of the area to assess the proposed tree-cutting. According to Ashok Ghorpade, head of the Garden Department, PMC, and a member of the committee, “The committee will inspect the site thoroughly and submit a report accordingly. The constitution of the committee is as per the guidelines given by NGT.”

The formation of the committee comes after the NGT directed the Maharashtra State Tree Authority to conduct a site visit and submit a report on the proposed tree-cutting for the Sadhu Vaswani Railway overbridge. The move is seen as a step towards ensuring that environmental concerns are addressed before proceeding with the construction of the Sadhu Vaswani Railway overbridge.
