Pune: Alleged Intimidation Attempt Over Ganga Kingston Amenity Plot Sparks Public Outrage
Pune, February 19, 2026: An alleged attempt to intimidate residents guarding a prime amenity plot at Ganga Kingston in Mohamadwadi on Thursday, February 19, has triggered outrage among local citizens, who claim that powerful vested interests are once again trying to lay claim to public land worth crores.
According to residents, four unidentified men arrived at the society gate and began shouting aggressively, questioning why citizens were protecting the nearly one-acre plot. The land, designated as an amenity space, has been safeguarded by residents for years, who say they have planted over 200 trees there to prevent encroachment.
One of the men allegedly claimed to be a corporator and, in what residents described as a threatening tone, instructed security guards to summon the society’s office-bearers. Citizens present at the scene said the men appeared more interested in asserting authority than understanding the legal status of the land.
“This plot has been saved from land grab attempts several times. Every time citizens protect it, some new group turns up claiming influence,” said a resident who witnessed the incident. “If they truly represent the public, why intimidate the public?”
Residents allege that the amenity plot has long been eyed by land mafias and politically connected individuals due to its high commercial value. They claim that repeated attempts have been made in the past to dilute its public-use status.
Following Thursday’s incident, residents submitted a complaint to the police and to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Commissioner, Naval Kishore Ram, demanding immediate protection of the land and formal notification of the plot as a public urban park.
Senior citizen Minoo Irani questioned the priorities of elected representatives. “Instead of addressing pressing issues like crime, corruption, pollution and poor civic amenities, some groups linked to corporators appear focused on pressuring citizens who are protecting public spaces. Citizens feel unsafe. Is this how public servants behave?” she asked.
Another resident, Raviraj Ghule, pointed to the financial stakes involved. “Amenity plots are worth crores. That is the real reason behind the pressure. We are already struggling with traffic chaos, bad air quality, water shortages and crumbling infrastructure. Instead of solving these issues, certain elements are busy eyeing public land for private gain,” he said.
Residents say the larger issue is not just one incident, but a pattern — where public land meant for parks and community use becomes vulnerable to encroachment through intimidation or political muscle. Urban planners note that amenity spaces are legally reserved in development plans to maintain environmental balance and community well-being. Any attempt to repurpose or informally control such land raises serious questions about transparency and governance.
Citizens of Ganga Kingston have now demanded that authorities publicly clarify the identity of those who arrived at the site and disclose whether any proposal exists concerning the land. “If everything is legitimate, let it be transparent. If not, action must be taken,” a residents’ group member said.
Until then, residents say they will continue guarding the plot — determined not to allow what they describe as yet another attempt to quietly convert public green space into private profit.
