Pune: In a rare feat, 7-year-old Ira Subramanian, Rutika Jadhav and Saanvi Nayak along with their parents managed to conquer Marahni Peak at The Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP). It is worthy to note that there was no formal training given to these kids. This trek was a treacherous one full of challenges of walking in snow, snowfall, hailstorm and rains which is highly unlikely in the month of April. These children are students of SNBP World School in Rahatani. (Cambridge)

On day 1 of the trek from Pekhri to Rangthar ( 5 km )

As per information, it was a 6-day trek with a total distance of 35 km, starting from Pekhri and ending at Brishangad.

Speaking about the trek, “ We started our trek from Pekhri. It rained heavily with chances of snowfall almost every evening. From Rangthar, it was a steep climb to Kauni to reach Kundri. Even before we reached the campsite, we witnessed snowfall making it extremely dangerous for us.  We camped at Kundri braving the – 10-degree temperature on day 2. On Day 3, snowfall was happening and the trek was of 9 kilometres to reach Marahni top.

It took us 10 hours of walking to reach there. After reaching the Marahni top, the very next day,  we crossed the pass to move on to Ookhal  where the temperature was – 14 Degrees. The trek was of 9 km that day.

On Day 2 of the trek from Rangthar to Kundri ( 6 km)

Walking in the snow and on the ridge line for most of the day made our journey exciting and dangerous. There was no scope for mistakes.

On Day 3 of the trek from Kundri to Marahni top to OOkhal with a lot of snowfall making it extremely dangerous for the trek ( 9 km)

Our whole body went numb braving the extreme temperatures.  The difficulty level for adults was too much given the conditions but the kids showed so much courage and adventure. Day 4 was comparatively easy, we trekked from Ookhal to the campsite at Raj Thach. The trek was only 4 kilometres.

On day 5, we trekked to Sara Laka. The snow has reduced considerably. We were excited as we walked in the forest. On Day 6, we ended our trek at Brishangad with a lot of memories and a sense of adventure.”
