Pune Battles Zika, Dengue, and Chikungunya Outbreak
Pune is grappling with a severe outbreak of Zika, Dengue, and Chikungunya, with 107, 94, and 68 cases reported respectively. The mixed weather conditions have created an ideal breeding ground for ‘Aedes aegypti’ mosquitoes, which spread these diseases. Doctors warn that the actual number of cases may be higher, as patients with mild symptoms may not be reported. “The disease doesn’t last long, making it difficult to detect after the ‘viral load’ decreases,” said an Epidemiologist. He also emphasizes the need for preventive measures, especially for pregnant women and senior citizens with pre-existing conditions.
The Pune Municipal Corporation has appointed 206 personnel to identify mosquito breeding sites and conduct spraying. “We are taking preventive measures, but citizens must also take care,” according to a PMC health officer. The corporation has issued notices to 1,780 citizens and organizations, imposing fines of Rs. 550 lakhs.
Residents, especially in slum areas, complain of inadequate spraying and garbage accumulation. “The Municipal Corporation should take more measures to prevent the spread of disease,” said a resident.
Experts stress the importance of preventive measures, such as removing water accumulation, using mosquito repellents, and maintaining a clean environment. A balanced diet, including coconut water, green leafy vegetables, and papaya leaf juice, can also help boost immunity.
Citizens are advised to be aware of symptoms like fever, body aches, and rashes. If infected, patients should drink plenty of fluids and maintain a light diet. Pregnant women and senior citizens with pre-existing conditions should take extra precautions.
By working together, Pune can combat the outbreak and restore health and well-being to its citizens.
