Pune: BJP Faces Internal Tensions As Aspirants Queue Up In Wakad
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal area is witnessing significant political churn, with multiple new entrants and aspirants seeking tickets, leading to rumblings of discontent among existing party workers.
The spotlight is currently on Wakad (Ward 25), where the reported move by Rahul Kalate and Vikram Waghmare (husband of former corporator Ashwini Waghmare) to join the BJP and seek tickets has stirred controversy. Local BJP aspirant Ram Wakadkar publicly opposed the move, stating, “We have been working for the BJP since 2014. Rahul Kalate is trying to enter the BJP only because he sees defeat ahead.” Vikram Waghmare’s candidacy is notable as his wife had previously contested on the panel of Rahul Kalate in 2017.
Adding to the dynamic, the influential Pimpri-Chinchwad Housing Society Federation, led by President Sanjeevan Sangale, announced it would field its own candidates to address residents’ issues, supporting the best candidate in other words regardless of party affiliation. This move adds an independent voter bloc that all aspirants must now consider.
The influx is not limited to Wakad. In Ward 18, former NCP leader and ‘Bharat Kesari’ Vijay Gavade, son of senior leader Hanumant Gavade, has also interviewed for a BJP ticket, aiming to contest under the leadership of MLA Shankar Jagtap. Furthermore, the recent resignation of Congress MLC Prajakta Satav has fueled strong speculation of her imminent induction into the BJP, which could reshape equations in the region.
While this surge of interest highlights the BJP’s perceived strength ahead of the polls, it has also sparked internal unease. Long-time party cadres and existing hopefuls have voiced opposition, arguing that loyalty and groundwork should be prioritized over new entrants. The party leadership now faces the delicate task of balancing these demands, managing aspirations, and maintaining unit cohesion to present a united front for the upcoming elections.
