Pune Cantonment Board Faces Backlash Over Delayed Road Repairs

Residents of Pune Cantonment are expressing frustration over the delayed response from the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) regarding road repairs. The heavy rains this monsoon season have left many roads pockmarked and difficult to navigate. “We have suffered a lot while negotiating through the potholed cantonment roads this season. The board should have done a better job before the monsoon,” said a PCB official.

Last week, the PCB floated a tender worth Rs 3 crore for repairing the worst-hit roads and laying bitumen patches. A senior PCB official stated that it would take two weeks to complete the tendering process, with actual work expected to start in the first week of October.

The Cantonment manages 48 kilometers of roads, while 22 kilometers are under the Military Engineering Services (MES) and 5 kilometers under the state Public Works Department (PWD). This year, conditions in both the cantonment and military zones have worsened significantly.

PCB has prioritized repairs on main roads with numerous potholes, including Canning Road between Lullanagar and Station Workshop, Kahun Road, Coyaji Road, and Prince of Wales Road. Additionally, the PCB criticized the PWD for its substandard maintenance of the Golibar Maidan junction stretch. The board plans to cover this stretch and submit a bill to the PWD, citing inadequate repairs.
