Pune: PMC Conducts Massive Cleanup After Ganesh Immersion Procession
Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) carried out a large-scale cleanup operation following the Ganesh immersion procession, focusing on major routes such as Laxmi Road, Kumthekar Road, Kelkar Road, and Tilak Road. A total of 3,970 conservancy staff members were involved in the cleanup.
The effort resulted in the collection of 3.5 tonnes of abandoned footwear and 167 tonnes of other waste, as large crowds attended the immersion procession, leaving behind discarded items.
To protect natural water bodies, PMC banned idol immersion in them and set up 45 artificial immersion sites where 101,281 idols were immersed. Additionally, 516 steel tanks were used to accommodate 282,604 idols. The idols were later scientifically immersed in a quarry in Wagholi.
PMC also encouraged citizens to donate their idols for recycling, which received a positive response. A total of 176,067 idols were collected at 239 centers across the city. Additionally, ward offices gathered 706,478 kg of prasad and floral waste, which will be repurposed.
PMC officials praised the role of social organizations in helping manage the waste during the Ganesh festival, with a focus not only on cleanliness but also on promoting environmental sustainability.
