Pune: Clear Mandate For Development, CM Fadnavis Urges Transparent Governance In PMC
Pune, January 17, 2025: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said that the people of Pune have once again stamped their approval on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development agenda, calling the public mandate both encouraging and responsibility-driven. Addressing the newly elected councillors of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Pune, the Chief Minister urged them to work in a manner that lives up to the trust reposed in them by citizens.
Emphasising that both the central and state governments stand firmly behind the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Fadnavis instructed the councillors to adopt honest and transparent governance to transform PMC into the best municipal corporation in the country.
Key Highlights from the Chief Minister’s Address:
- Pune’s electorate has delivered a clear and decisive mandate in favour of development.
- The historic majority achieved in the PMC elections is unmatched over the last 30–35 years.
- A strong mandate brings greater responsibility and accountability towards citizens.
- Transparent administration and zero tolerance for corruption will be enforced.
The Chief Minister congratulated all newly elected councillors and interacted with them during the meeting. Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol, Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil, Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal, MP Prof. Dr Medha Kulkarni, BJP city president Dheeraj Ghate, state general secretary Rajesh Pandey, MLAs Sunil Kamble, Siddharth Shirole and Hemant Rasane, election in-charge Ganesh Bidkar, Jagdish Mulik and others were present.
Fadnavis also boosted the morale of candidates who faced defeat, referring to them as “future councillors” and acknowledging their contribution to the party’s collective effort.
Highlighting long-term planning, the Chief Minister said that like Prime Minister Modi, who begins planning for the next five years immediately after a victory, the Pune civic body must also focus on structured development planning. He stressed that groundwork for planned development projects should begin within the next two years.
On Governance and Accountability:
- PMC must function as an instrument of social and economic transformation.
- Municipal governance is not a business or commission-driven enterprise.
- Responsibilities assigned by the party must be executed with integrity and transparency.
- No misconduct, misuse of power, or arrogance—regardless of position—will be tolerated.
“Your public image is your greatest asset in politics. Your image reflects the image of the BJP. Work in the Pune Municipal Corporation in a way that strengthens, not damages, this image,”
— Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra
The Chief Minister concluded by reiterating that if the trust of Punekars is honoured through sincere governance, the leadership will continue to earn public support for decades to come.
