The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) had a meeting with the Dehugaon Municipal Council officials on July 18. MPCB told them to set up sewage treatment plants at Kapur and Ghat nullahs to stop untreated wastewater from going into the Indrayani river. It seems the place doesn’t have STP facilities as per an MPCB official.

After seeing toxic foam on the river at the end of June, the board gave a show cause notice to the council on June 24. The notice basically said the council is accountable for the river pollution and asked why they shouldn’t face consequences for it.

After the notice, the Dehugaon Municipal Council shared their plans to address the problem during the hearing on July 18. After reviewing their response, Manchak Jadhav, the regional officer, (additional charge) gave an interim directive to the council. They were told to provide a plan within 15 days to establish STPs. Additionally, the board instructed the council to get the current STPs up and running within seven days.

“We are keeping a close eye on the matter, and we will proceed with additional steps following the proper procedure,” an official stated.
