Commuters traversing Pune’s Metro lines are encountering obstacles due to incomplete stations at Khadki, Yerawada, and Range Hills, despite the promise of enhanced connectivity. Yerawada station is expected to commence operations next month, pending adjustments to its exit-entry point. Meanwhile, Khadki requires an additional four months, and Range Hills faces a delay of approximately a year due to pending defence clearances.

This delay compels commuters bound for Khadki and Range Hills to get down at alternative stations like Bopodi or Shivajinagar, while those heading to Yerwada must go to Bund Garden or Kalyaninagar stations, leading to significant inconvenience for commuters. Transport activist Chenthil Iyer criticised the lack of coordination among government agencies and highlighted the evident flaws in planning. He advocates for the completion of all stations before the Metro lines become operational, which would have mitigated the current inconvenience.

Nayan Tambat, an IT employee in Yerawada, emphasised the urgency of station openings, citing benefits for IT workers, airport travellers, and those commuting to Lohegaon.

To this, Amol Deshpande, Pune Metro Convener said, “We urge the people to cooperate just for a month as this is an important issue to sort out at Yerwada Station. Pune Metro has been transparent with the issue and is trying its best to solve it as soon as possible for the convenience of the commuters.”

Delays in Khadki were attributed to issues surrounding land handover. Nevertheless, progress is being made, with Khadki nearing completion in four months and defence clearances obtained for Range Hills.

Currently, it is necessary for timely infrastructure development to ensure smooth commuting experiences for the public.

Moreover, efforts must be intensified to minimise inconvenience and increase connectivity across Pune’s Metro Network.
