The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy rainfall in Pune district starting from Thursday, August 1. In this context, Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Shekhar Singh has issued a warning for citizens, especially those living near riverbanks, to remain vigilant. Commissioner Singh has instructed the municipal administration to ensure that the emergency response system is ready to handle any potential crisis.

To plan for the expected heavy rainfall, Commissioner Shekhar Singh held a review meeting with various departments today. The meeting was attended by Additional Commissioners Pradeep Jambhale, Vijaykumar Khorate, Chandrakant Indalkar, Health Medical Officer Dr. Lakshman Gophane, City Engineer Makrand Nikam, Chief Engineer Shrikant Savane, Ramdas Tambe, Assistant City Engineer Babasaheb Galbale, Dr. Gnyandev Zhunjare, Sanjay Kulkarni, Manoj Sethia, Deputy Commissioner Manoj Lonkar, Ravikiran Ghodke, Anna Bodde, Rajesh Agele, Regional Officers Sucheta Pansare, Amit Pandit, Ajinkya Yeole, Umesh Dhakne, Dr. Ankush Jadhav, Sitaram Bahure, Kishore Nanavare, Chief Disaster Management Officer Omprakash Bahival, and Special Officer Kiran Gaikwad, among other officials related to emergency management.

Increased rainfall in the catchment areas and riverbeds could lead to rising water levels. Consequently, there may be instances of water entering houses along riverbanks. The dams on the rivers flowing through Pimpri-Chinchwad city have seen an increase in water storage and are nearing full capacity. Large-scale water discharge from these dams could potentially create flood conditions. Therefore, before the river water reaches a critical level, Commissioner Singh has advised regional officers to set up announcements via loudspeakers to inform residents living along the riverbanks. Singh also mentioned that separate coordination officers have been appointed to manage relocation of flood-affected citizens and provide necessary facilities, food, and medical services.

Commissioner Singh has directed departments to inspect and address potential areas of silt or debris accumulation in the city. Special vigilance and patrolling by municipal teams, particularly during the night, are to be implemented in areas along the riverbanks.

Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Khot has been appointed for ‘B’ and ‘G’ regional offices, and Assistant Commissioner Tanaji Narlle will oversee ‘D’ and ‘H’ regional offices.

In case of a flood situation, coordination with the Army (B.E.G. and C., Oudh Military Station) and NDRF has been planned. The fire brigade is on standby with all necessary equipment, and a 24×7 team is ready to reach the scene. Additional Commissioner Chandrakant Indalkar has informed that the public should contact the Municipal Fire Control Room at 9922501475 or 020-27423333, and the Central Control Room at 020-67331111 in case of any emergency. Citizens are urged to follow the instructions issued by the municipal and police administration and cooperate with the administrative machinery.
