A first of its kind eco terrace garden was inaugurated today on February 14, 2024. The garden is established on the rooftop of the Mahatma Phule Sanskrutik Bhavan in Wanowrie. A completely citizen driven initiative was supported extensively by Wanawadi Ramtekdi Ward Office and the health department staff. 

The project has been supported by Waterproof Solutions, Rotary Club of NIBM, and Rotary Club of Poona. The initiative was inaugurated at the hands of Sandeep Kadam, Deputy Commissioner, Sewage Management Cell, PMC, Shyamala Desai, President, National Societies Clean Cities, Prasad Katkar, Deputy Municipal Corporation, PMC, Balasaheb Dhavale Patil, Assistant Commissioner, PMC, Maithili Manakwad, Founder, Wanowrie Residents Forum, Ashish Sankpal, Waterproof Solutions, Anushka Kajbaje, environmentalist, and brand ambassadors of atleast 10 Moholla Committees from Pune City and Apex committee members. 

The eco terrace garden is spread across 8,000 square feet and has over 400 different saplings. The garden will remain open from 7 am to 1 pm. Sandeep Kadam, Deputy Commissioner, solid waste management, PMC said that civic body extends it’s support to the initiative. I shall ensure that a high mast is installed in the area, a green net to secure the spot from harsh sunlight. Residents and PMC have worked together for this project. 

Shyamala Desai, of National Societies For Clean Cities said that this is an example of how citizens and PMC can work together. We hope that citizens come together to ensure Pune is clean and green. This is the 10th such rooftop terrace garden. 

Maithili Manakwad of Wanowrie Residents Forum informed that the eco terrace garden is an example of we can live life by applying three R’s, Reuse, Reduce and Recycle. The entire garden is set up where citizens have contributed ensuring that waste products can be utilised effectively to beautify the area. 

Anushka Kajbaje, environmentalist informed that the garden has over 400 different saplings. There are a lot of saplings which people aren’t aware. Garden and nature enthusiasts must visit the garden. 

Manakwad further said that the garden has a ayurvedic garden, butterfly zone, flowering plants, fruit garden, etc. 

Ashish Sankpal informed that the eco terrace garden was established after water proofing the area. We are now appealing citizens to visit the place and implement similar concepts on their terrace to compost waste.
