Residents of Pashan, Sus, Balewadi, Mahalunge, Bavdhan, Punawale, Ravet, Wakad, Tathawade, and Hinjewadi, often find themselves stuck in long queues of vehicles due to traffic congestion. But the problem of the residents living on the Mumbai Pune Bengaluru Highway is not just traffic but also the accumulating garbage which is neglected by the Pune Municipal Corporation, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, National Highway Authority of India and Pune Metropolitan Regional Development Authority.

The highway is part of various government organisations and local residents demanded that the government institutions must take cognisance of the issue and clear the garbage.

Several netizens have expressed their thoughts about the garbage collection & littering issue on social media. They have also criticised and raised doubts about the SWaCH rankings too.

An X user tweets “As a citizen it’s just sad to see such activities. No garbage collection and monitoring solutions in place for these areas. This must be controlled and addressed at earliest.”

Another X user posts “When there is little facility of garbage disposal, ppl have to throw it wherever they find space…question is why municipality or Govt. give permission to build new towers when they can’t ensure basic facilities?”

An X user tweeted “Honestly I was just surprised that Pune even made it to the top 10 in terms of cleanliness. My personal observation, the city is absolutely filthy. Everywhere I went there was just garbage lying around. Dust, dirt & add filthy roads to it.”

An X user said “It’s now not about the PMC who will always clean up for this, it’s our mess and the residents living in the area’s mention above to wake up & stop anyone who is throwing the garbage out on the streets. Everything PMC can’t do. We have to be responsible for OUR MESS!!”

Another X user comments “Pune is growing but backwards … lots of complains on daily basis … but it looks like the system and officials both are sleeping.”

Not only this, but one of the growing concerns to the residents is increasing waste that is piling up on the highway on both sides of the road. The passerby as well as many private vehicles can be seen dumping waste from their vehicles on the highway causing various health issues.

Many times, the garbage is also lit by miscreants which adds to the pollution. It is high time that PMC, PMRDA, NHAI etc provide state-of-the-art infrastructure and also maintain cleanliness in the area by clearing these chronic spots of waste.
