Pune: The unexplained deaths of pigs in the Bhartinagar area of Kothrud have raised serious health concerns among residents. Over the past week, five to six pig carcasses have been discovered daily in a drain near the Kothrud PMPML Depot.

On Thursday (February 6), another 12 dead pigs were found, bringing the total to nearly 40. The exact cause of these deaths is still undetermined, with authorities yet to confirm whether poisoning or other factors are responsible.

Despite repeated incidents, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been slow in removing the carcasses, leading to an unbearable stench and worsening hygiene conditions. While some carcasses were removed on Wednesday, new discoveries the following day have heightened public concern.

Health experts warn that improper disposal of animal carcasses could pose significant health risks, especially as Pune is already dealing with cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS).

Dushyant Mohol, BJP Yuva Morcha General Secretary, criticized the PMC for neglecting the issue. “Despite 40 dead pigs being found, no substantial action has been taken. We have formally raised this issue with PMC Health Chief Dr. Neena Borade, who has now directed officials to take necessary steps,” he stated.

A detailed investigation has been initiated to determine if food waste dumped in the area is linked to these unexplained deaths. The post-mortem reports of the pigs are expected to provide further clarity.

Meanwhile, efforts to identify the owners of the dead pigs have been unsuccessful. Although two to three families in Kothrud rear pigs, none have come forward to claim responsibility. The municipal authorities have yet to take action to trace them.
