Pune, January 19, 2026: Following the BJP’s decisive victory in the Pune Municipal Corporation elections, public attention has now shifted to who will become the next Mayor of Pune. However, the process of mayoral selection will begin only after the reservation for the Mayor’s post is officially announced. It has now been confirmed that the draw for reservation of Mayor posts in 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra will be conducted on January 22.
The Urban Development Department has shared this information through an official communication, stating that a special meeting has been scheduled to finalise the mayoral reservations. According to the department’s letter, the reservation draw will be held on Tuesday, January 22, 2026, at 11 am at the Mantralaya in Mumbai, under the chairmanship of the Minister of State for Urban Development. Reservations for Mayor posts in all 29 municipal corporations will be finalised during this meeting.
With the announcement of the reservation draw, political activity has intensified across municipal corporations in the state. Based on the reservation outcome, ruling and opposition parties are expected to project their candidates for the Mayor’s post. There is particular interest in major municipal corporations such as Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Thane, where the reservation category will play a crucial role in leadership selection.
Senior officials, including the Chief Secretary, Deputy Chief Minister (Urban Development), Additional Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary, and senior election officials, have been instructed to be present for the process. The reservation draw will be conducted at the ministerial level to ensure transparency.
Once the Mayor’s reservation is finalised, the process of electing Mayors and Deputy Mayors in the respective municipal corporations will commence. Depending on the reservation, women, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, or Other Backward Class corporators will get the opportunity to assume the Mayor’s post.
For Pune in particular, the reservation draw is considered highly significant, as it will determine which category will lead the city in the coming term. Overall, the January 22 reservation draw is expected to shape the political direction of municipal corporations across Maharashtra for the next two and a half years, with political strategies and candidate selections gaining momentum immediately thereafter.
